Our Local Food

The Happy Adventure Inn hosts an acclaimed seafood and wild game restaurant, commonly referred to as Chuckys, featuring locally sourced products and traditional Newfoundland dishes. Overlooking the Happy Adventure harbour, the restaurant offers guests the opportunity to taste some of the Atlantic ocean’s finest offerings while observing the very harbour from which their seafood was brought to shore. The Happy Adventure Inn’s restaurant is the predecessor to Chucky’s Fish and Ships, formally located in downtown St. John’s, and it still serves the same fish and chip recipe that Chucky made famous. The restaurant offers Quidi Vidi draft beer, wine by glass and bottle, and a fully stocked bar including many local spirits. While the specials menu changes frequently, the Happy Adventure Inn regularly offers Newfoundland snow crab, moose burgers and steaks, and of course fresh cod-fish among many other options from both land and sea.
The Happy Adventure Inn’s capacity is limited and, as a favourite among both locals and visitors, reservations are highly recommended as much in advance as possible.

Our moose meat this year has a local story. This was a 9 point bull. It was harvested on foot by three local volunteer hunting guides. Whether moose burger or moose steak, your meal is wild, organic and has an economically beneficial impact on our community. It has assisted the Gander Heritage Trails in raising $1,500 towards the preservation, protection, and promotion of Gander’s unique aviation culture and heritage. Your meal has also financially assisted the local meat shop and our local restaurant which employs local residents. Thank you for supporting our local residents, non-profit organizations and businesses!

Meet Lloyd and his wife Louise! They live just across the harbour from the Inn. During most of the summer season they catch the cod that is served in our restaurant. Their cod is some of the best that you will taste. Its large flake and sweet taste is due to the cold waters in Bonavista Bay. They not only catch the fish but are involved in the scientific study that monitors the cod stocks of this bay. Their knowledge, expertise and hard work, help ensure that we are not over fishing and that the stocks are able to grow and replenish at a sustainable rate.

Our lobsters are dropped off weekly by Sandy and her husband Bon. They have been catching lobsters for many years and are currently our exclusive supplier. Sandy and Bon grew up on Bonavista bay and supply some of the best on the island.
